Abita Andygator is Illegal in Mississippi

October 29th, 2009 by braddock

This awesome brew from Abita brewing in our neighboring state of Louisiana is illegal in Mississippi due to it’s 8% alcohol by volume.  An Andygator, a shrimp po-boy from the Veranda, and the Saints winning on TV makes for a damn fine Sunday afternoon.

I had to buy this in Tennessee and smuggle it back across the state line.  The antiquated restrictions on beer in Mississippi are truly ridiculous.  You can find out more on the beers you’re missing and what you can do to change that at RaiseYourPints.

I hear ya man. Normally when I go to Memphis I have been coming back with me, because of the poor selections here in MS. I recently went to Kansas City and brought back some home brew that I made with a buddy in July. Fat Tire clone (which I buy Fat Tire in Memphis). Saw your site in the Reflector today. Where do you purchase your home brew equipment/ingredients? Am going to start brewing my own beer soon.

I’m a big Fat Tire fan too…really anything from New Belgium Brewery. They’ve got a great new beer for Octoberfest called “Hoptober”. It’s hoppy and awesome. I got my initial kit from williamsbrewing.com but buy most of my hardware and ingredients from austinhombrew.com now. They’ve got a huge selection and deliver fast to Starkville. Let me know what you brew up.

ahs-sumitt-ipa-extract Summit IPA extract kit from Austin Homebrew Supply This kit is an awesome assault on the senses with 3oz of a high alpha hop named Summit.  It comes in with an O.G. of 1.072 and approximately 7.5% ABV. This is my first high gravity brew and I can't help whispering it words of encouragement as it bubbles away in the fermentor.

About Starkville Homebrew

It’s hard being a good beer lover in North Mississippi. Our state’s antiquated restriction on the allowed percentage of alcohol by volume in beer prevents the majority of craft beers and microbrews from being sold in Mississippi. As a result our store shelves and coolers are stocked mainly with the tasteless offerings from the three American mega-breweries.

Beer brewed with love, care, and quality ingredients is tough for the average Mississippian to find. Thankfully home brewing is a legal option for beer connoisseurs in our state. I’ve just taken up this hobby and I’m discovering how easy it can be to create my own truly incredible homebrew. I know there are others in the Starkville area who appreciate good beer. My hope is that we can find each other and build a local culture of home brewing together.
